Shaandaar 2015

A jigsaw puzzle infused with animations is what Shaandaar is all about. A few minutes into the movie, and you are left wondering whether it is a cartoon series, a Dharma production wedding film (read: a grand castle at an exotic European location this time), or a musical you have come to watch. Sadly, the formula of a destination wedding, good looking people, loud families, could not rescue us from the wrath of the not-so Shaandaar movie.

Meet the forcefully effervescent ‘Aila’ Alia ( Alia Bhatt) who, surprise-surprise, plays an exact opposite of the image the actress built for herself post her Koffee with Karan quiz debacle. A walking ‘Google’, she has an answer for everything, and why not for she has all the time in the world to read.

Bahl took Terry Prachett’s magic realism to another level in the movie in trying to make us believe in the existence of a girl who doesn’t get any sleep whatsoever. The Cinderella of the castle is brought home by her ‘Peeps’, Pankaj Kapur, who only wishes to find his adopted daughter a Prince who can put her to sleep (no pun intended). The adopted child receives but no love from her foster mother and grandmother, Sushma Seth.

Wakey-wakey for walks in the wedding planner, Jagjinder Joginder (Shahid Kapoor), who too turns out to be an insomniac. The wedding of Arora clan’s Esha (Sanah Kapoor) with the Sindhi Fundwani’s uber-cool Robin, a serial gymmer is but a deal to save both the bankrupt families of bankruptcy. Yes, you read it right! They end up spending a lot of moolah to get money off of each other. The bride is interested in the marriage but all everybody including the Arora matriarch, Sushma Seth and the Fundwani head of the clan, played by Sanjay Kapoor are interested in are gold digging. A word of caution, don’t forget to take your dark glasses for you’ll witness a lot of bling with the Fundwani’s show of gold.

Amidst the wedding planning, Alia and Shahid make time for romance, and spending their nights together swimming and dancing, playing and eating together. The bouts of comic exchange between Jagjinder and Kapur, could have been adorable, but seem forced as the latter playing the protective father (it’s a no-brainer to guess that she is the love child of Kapur).

A grand wedding picnic, a sangeet in one of the broadway theatres, took the grand wedding to another level. What could have been a witty episode was the ‘Mehndi with Karan’ segment. It does amuse us for a bit, and could have been explored further.

If you want to go watch the movie, go only for the new kid on the block. The most promising Kapoor in the movie was Sanah Kapoor. The Gulaabo will literally steal your heart away with her dimpled smile and natural banter in the movie. The cherry on the cake is the sangeet qawalli song, where the body-shamed bride receives support from members of her family. We’d love to see what the girl will do next! It comes as a surprise that Bahl is the same movie maverick who gave us Queen. It’s okay, if you shun Shaandaar!
